LONDON & SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 2000--IBM today announced it has joined forces with TDK to develop an array of Bluetooth (TM) wireless technology solutions for the award-winning ThinkPad family. As part of the agreement, IBM will work closely with TDK Systems Europe to design PC Cards, and other innovative ThinkPad solutions which will support Bluetooth wireless technology delivering both data and voice connectivity. Bluetooth allows the wireless exchange of data between computers, computer peripherals, mobile phones and other electronic devices within a radius of about 10 meters ( approximately 33 feet).

``IBM is uniquely positioned to deliver wireless e-business solutions for corporate customers and consumers and we believe our unmatched wireless capabilities are a unique differentiator for our products,' said Adalio Sanchez, general manager, IBM Mobile Computing. ``We are very pleased to join forces with TDK to deliver unique Bluetooth solutions for our customers.'

Keith Marsden, managing director, TDK Systems Europe Ltd, added: ``IBM has chosen to work with TDK because of our innovation and technical expertise in wireless technologies. As one of the original founders of the Bluetooth special interest group, IBM has been quick to recognize the sheer potential of Bluetooth - we are delighted to be working with them to develop the technology for its next generation of mobile computing devices.'

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a short range wireless communications standard which uses the 2.4Ghz radio frequency. Designed to allow transmission of data within short range providing a low-power, low-cost link between Bluetooth wireless devices such as computers, printers and mobile phones. Bluetooth devices automatically detect each other when in range and are then able to exchange data. Over 1600 companies worldwide actively developing applications, the scope for Bluetooth extends into domestic and personal entertainment appliances as well as cars.

IBM is a leader in wireless technologies and has been instrumental in establishing standards for personal area networks (PANs) such as Bluetooth and wireless LAN technologies such as IEEE 802.11b. IBM is a promoter member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), and a member of Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA).
