From the what its worth department:
Just visited the local store here in Louisiana and spoke for some time with a particularly articulate Ops Manager (2nd in command). This store appeared very busy with plenty of floor help and perhaps only 1/2 dozen people waiting for merchandise to be delivered.
Store very clean.Customers in virtually every department throughout store.
Asked if special sale on...Nothing other than the usual seasonal flyers
re: OPS Manager:
Very positive company man with chain for 6 years
Direction from corporate to hire more "floor associates" to assist and move customers to sale.
hmmm(main complaint of shoppers at my office "can't get help at SME")
This one of most profitable/highest volume stores in chain
Service has high hopes for Witkin and new EVP Cusano
"Cusano very sharp"
"Painful move but common knowledge red ink in the West was dragging us down for many quarters".
Move away from computers "only makes sense" since many Service stores lease adjacent space to Office Depot. "stupid to compete with OD in that market"
Don't lose confidence in us...But now Witken needs to deliver on big salary we're paying him.
Jewelry portion of store was right up front, a move store made 2 years ago, to transition to jewelry store that sold variety items versus "variety store that, buy the way sells jewelry.
I'm patient and
I'm long on SME
