Winstar Awarded Contract for Up to $100 Million to Provide Data and Local Voice Services to Federal Government Offices in Cincinnati
biz.yahoo.com
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 2000--Winstar Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: WCII - news) today announced that it has been awarded a sole source Metropolitan Area Acquisition (MAA) award from the General Services Administration's (GSA) Federal Technology Service (FTS).

The potential value of the award is $100 million over eight years. Winstar is the first broadband fixed wireless carrier to be awarded a major federal local contract. All previous grants have been made to incumbent local exchange carriers or AT&T.

Under the four-year contract, which includes four additional one-year options, Winstar will provide data and local switched voice services, as well as dedicated transmission services to government users in Cincinnati, OH. The MAA contract also allows Winstar the opportunity to offer new technologies and services as they become commercially available, ensuring that government users can benefit from the same technology enhancements and cost savings as the private sector. Eligible users include federal agencies, federal contractors and certain federally supported universities and laboratories, among others.

``This MAA contract win is a landmark development for Winstar,' said William J. Rouhana, Jr., Winstar chairman and chief executive officer. ``It establishes us as a premier broadband services provider for the federal government and significantly enhances our position in the broadband services marketplace for governmental users. Our national broadband fixed wireless and fiber network delivers high-quality, cost-effective and reliable services that will enable the government to better serve all citizens.'
