He was a sex maniac- he had sex with several women a day- he married as a protection so he did not have to deal with the subject of commitment with any of the woman he slept with. He pleated handkercheifs all his life- until at the end of his life someone told him that was unsanitary and then he began to pleat klenexes. He was his characters- the Genius is him, the young man in An AMerican Tragedy is him- although that person is a little saner and more likable than he was. I'm guessing you don't know much about Drieser- he wasn't a depressive he was a compulsive, an egomaniac, probably a sociopath- because he seems to have had no conscience.
