I thought that this was interesting in ref. to NOK and others who are playing the wireless.

In the U.S., AT&T expects to launch EDGE trials next year, with commercial availability in 2002. WCDM trials are currently underway in Asia and Europe; Japan has a year or two lead over the U.S., says Nelson Sollenberger, who heads up the wireless research division at AT&T Labs. Nokia is testing in China, Finland, and Japan. Advance--the alliance between AT&T and BT--expects to launch service in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the U.K. in the second half of this year. Also spearheading the transition to 3G, Ericsson is field-testing in Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, the U.K., and the U.S..

What's next? G4 networks running at 5 Mbps to 10 Mbps. AT&T Labs is pioneering this effort in the U.S. The model for G4, says Sollenberger, is the wireless cable modem. Expect that around 2005.
