Credit Suisse First Boston cast a warm glow over shares of Applied Materials (AMAT: news, msgs), as its shares jumped 6 5/16 to 108 3/4. Analyst Elliott Rogers said the company's second-quarter bookings are likely to be in the range of $2.7 billion to $2.9 billion, with the third quarter in the $3 billion plus range.

Others in the chip equipment space responded in kind to Applied's rise. KLA-Tencor (KLAC: news, msgs) gained 2 7/8 to 89 5/8 and Teradyne (TER: news, msgs) advanced 4 5/16 to 92 1/2. Novellus (NVLS: news, msgs) was 2 13/16 higher at 64 7/8.
