Actually, it is much simpler: most people want a lot and a house all their own, and they cannot afford to live in the city. In search of even better deals, people have fanned out all over the Washington area, to create the infamous "exurbs". I love cities, and I am in suburban Annapolis for similar reasons. I will move to Washington after my son graduates high- school, but I am more affluent than I was 16 years ago, and might even be able to afford a house. Plus, with only my wife and me, I do not mind a nice apartment........
