Perhaps she could have told you and at least you could then have taken your son to the galley or bathroom if you thought he shouldn't see this disgusting behavior. I probably would have warned you and given you the option, and you could have gotten up and left when you saw it happening if it embarrassed you.
On the other hand, even when things occur that we would just as soon NOT have our children see at that point in time, it provided you with an opportunity to teach him that there was nothing shameful or ugly or embarrassing about the act of breastfeeding, to treat it matter of factly and honestly, to say "let's give the mom some privacy". You realize that at any age, our children are very sensitive to a parent's reactions. If you were embarrassed and "looking elsewhere", then he has now learned that that woman did something "bad", So we have another generation of men raised with an ambivalent and confused reaction to the mysterious female breast. |
