appro,
Told ya you should stand on the soapbox more often... Enjoyed your post.
Anyway, you guys must be reading a different Gildered Age than I.

Much flowery prose saying, essentially, "It's the bandwidth, stupid"

Quoting: "These companies all use computers, but they are not computer companies. All the conceptual foundations of the computer age are reduced to irrelevance. A new economy is emerging, based on a new sphere of cornucopian radiance: blah, blah, blah... Promethean light".

Gimmee a break, Gilder.. How about putting it in Frankenstein dialogue-- "Hardware Bad. Software Good."

Storewidth isn't about physically storing data. It's about accessing the data you need and only the data you need (especially when you don't know specifically what you need). Raw storage will always be the least valuable aspect of storewidth.

Robert wants to have his investment evaluation information at his fingertips and wants to retrieve relevant data quickly and efficiently. That is a software function-- not a raw storage function. His need for local storage diminishes as greater bandwidth is complemented by more effective, efficient network search algorithms.

The object of this exercise-- in business, in investing, in entertainment is not to possess the most bits at any given time, the object is to have the right bits at the right time. Software.<p>

By the way, your computer system sounds a lot like my wife's closet..... jammed with cool stuff but she can't find anything to wear tonight... gotta run out to Saks and get something new (Imelda Marcos would be jealous).
