John, Hitachi's response looks weaker than I thought it would be. Accusing Rambus of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act? Nonsense! First of all, Rambus is no Microsoft. Any idiot can see that. Second, if the patents hold, then Rambus will have every right to enforce their patents. Third, if the patents don't hold, then Rambus won't have any leverage on other companies anyway. Anti-trust has nothing to do with it.

Of course, Hitachi is also claiming prior art based on their JEDEC story. This might be the only real argument they have. And unfortunately, I fear the possibility that Hitachi could still win based on this argument alone. But if their claims of prior art are enough, why bring up this anti-trust nonsense? Hitachi is only trying to muddy the waters here.

One thing is for certain. These patents in question seem to be more valid than I thought. And certainly they aren't just about something as common as strobing data on both edges of a clock. So I guess Rambus really does present a strong case. Now it's up to Hitachi and buddies to try and push the JEDEC story as far as they can. We'll also see just how well Hitachi's "friends" stay committed to their struggle against Rambus' suit. One settlement, and the dominos start to fall.

As usual, all this is just my humble opinion. Correct me if I'm mistaken.
