Not that Netscape didn't make mistakes, but I think what the whole browser war showed was that there was no way there'd
ever be another hot startup selling Windows software. It was against the Empire's laws, but that made life pretty boring and the action all moved out to the provinces.


Bingo. NSCP's biggest mistake was to compete with MSFT. This was inevitably a losing battle. They should have and could have been YHOO, probably bigger. The key thing was the lack of understanding of the importance of eye-balls, or at least it took them too long to get this. This can be attributed to the nature of how the company came to be and the people behind the company. If there had been media-savvy people in the upper ranks of management, they would have been asking the right questions and coming up with a better winning business model.
