Glenn, I just put in a Athm cable modem service last week.
Other than downloads I'm not impressed.
When they have the technology to use the cable modem for uploading capability, then maybe
I'll like it. Right now I can only upload data at the speed of the phone connection.
DSL was my first choice because I have it here in Seattle, but unfortunately its not available
yet in my area down in San Diego.

James,

I have cable that is through a privately owned cable firm. This spring they have been replacing all the old copper in the main lines with fiber. Uplaod speed is also 10 mbps. It is not "cheap." Do you know if the backbone cable in the San Diego area has been upgraded to fiber? The local area had copper until last fall and uploads were really slow.

We are occasionally down now and then has they add more fiber to different loops. To put it in service, they take our loop off line for about 10 minutes. That upgrade will be done by mid to late summer.

I changed my subscription to 1.5 mbps from 10 mbps due to a savings of $60 per month. The 1.5 mbps seems adequate for my needs.
