Jan Global Chipmaking Machine Sales Soar 128% Yr On Yr
Monday, March 27, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--January sales of semiconductor production machinery around the world soared 128% year on year to 2.97 billion dollars, the seventh consecutive month of such increase, according to data compiled by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan and Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International.

Sales in Taiwan were particularly strong, quadrupling to 860 million dollars.

The steep rise reflects increased production to eliminate the worldwide shortage of chips used in mobile phones and personal computers.

South Korea saw sales jump 212.7%, Europe posted 163.1% growth, while Japan registered a 103.1% gain. Seasonal factors accounted for the relatively modest 30.3% gain in the U.S.

By machinery type, sales of chip assembly equipment jumped 151.1%, while those of wafer-processing machines and testing equipment increased 145.8% and 144.8%, respectively.
