Actually MSFT holds all the cards here.
MSFT has the option to go the full appeal route and basically delay final adjudication - until sometime in the yr 2002.

My impression is the the Gore people are extremely afraid of MSFT kicking this case into appeal, because they know most Americans, while perhaps recognizing MSFT has a de facto quasi monopoly in one segment of the larger computer business, also believe that the benefits of standardization far exceed any alleged harm to competitors. Bottom line is from a consumer standpoint, MSFT is in essence a benign monopoly at worst.

Larry Ellison of Oracle has proposed MSFT be split whereby 3 different versions of windows would exist. We know the harm to consumers that would do. How convenient for Larry and his world of giant servers.

I did trim of some MSFT last week, cause i suspected Gates would not budge much. More importantly because the next doubling of MSFT stock means a trillion dollar cap, i think there are better opportunities for companies that have perhaps a chance to increase 4 or 5 times value, whereas MSFT at this point is unlikely to do that anytime soon.
