From a tactical POV, I think that marking time until Reno is on her pension would be better for MSFT.

However, a public company has to take shareholder interests into consideration also. In the end, the markets have a way of rewarding excellent performance, but meantime, it's tough to attract the top talent when the share-price is stagnant for more than a year.

I personally think that MSFT should offer to break-up into two entities, an OS company and an application company. I would imagine that teams from each would be fairly chummy anyway. And if MS-Office is good, it should be able to stand alone.

I actually read in the Washington Post article of Mar. 24th that MSFT offered to split up. Could be that's inaccurate though. If they did offer that, and the DOJ rejected it, then obviously the DOJ doesn't want to settle, and so then I'd say just mark time until after the elections.
