SS7 could certainly be used to complete an end-to-end connection via a lambda-switched fiber network. I have no idea if that's being done or planned, but it sounds interesting. If there is enough need to dynamically re-allocate the bandwidth, then what it would take is for each optical element to have an SS7 connection either directly or via a gateway.

I also agree with the acquisition theory, but my bet's on Cisco. They need SS7 expeertise big time.
