Interesting _On_ Topic news! "Sun Microsystems Suing Two Hong Kong Firms For Copyright Infringement"

MAR 24,2000

HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- Sun Microsystems Inc. is suing recent Hong Kong Internet upstart Sunevision Holdings Ltd. and a subsidiary, alleging the companies' names and logos infringe on its trademark, the South China Morning Post reported Saturday.

Sun Microsystems (SUNW) sent legal papers Thursday to Sunevision, the Internet arm of property developer Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., and subsidiary Sun Technology Services, the newspaper reported.

Sun Microsystems also began legal proceedings this week against Lai Sun Hotels International Ltd. to prevent it from changing its name to eSun.com Holdings as planned, the newspaper said.

Sun Hung Kai said it will fight the claim in local court, saying the two companies will take "whatever steps required to defend the proceedings and to protect our names and interests," according to the newspaper.

Sun Hung Kai Properties said the word "sun" is common in English and is a transliteration of a Chinese character that means "new" as well as being widely used in many names and logos in Hong Kong.

"We are also of the opinion that the members of the public are extremely unlikely to assume any connection between Sun Microsystems with Sunevision Holdings and Sun Technology Services," the company said.

Sun Hung Kai said it hopes to resolve the issue out of court, the paper said, adding the problem began before Sunevision's listing in mid-March on Hong Kong's Growth Enterprise Market.
