Well, you really shouldn't call the subject bankrupt since you brought it up. It apparently meant something to you when you posted it.

Of course I don't want pain. But if you want to discuss ultimate issues of The Good then pain is only part of the debate. Your statement made it the only criteria. Philosophers and theologians discuss the nature or meaning of suffering, but don't argue that it's the supreme good. I suppose hedonism would argue that happiness is the supreme good, but most other philosophies don't.
