TOKYO, March 27 Asia Pulse - January sales of semiconductor production machinery around the world soared 128% year on year to US$2.97 billion, the seventh consecutive month of such increase, according to data compiled by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan and Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International.

Sales in Taiwan were particularly strong, quadrupling to US$860 million dollars.

The steep rise reflects increased production to eliminate the worldwide shortage of chips used in mobile phones and personal computers.

South Korea saw sales jump 212.7%, Europe posted 163.1% growth, while Japan registered a 103.1% gain. Seasonal factors accounted for the relatively modest 30.3% gain in the US.

151.1%, while those of wafer-processing machines and testing equipment increased 145.8% and 144.8%, respectively.
