John, thread, there are a couple of good articles at the site below, for anyone who has some time and wants to learn more about SANs in general (1st and 4th articles) and SANs vs. NASs (1st article). NAS's of course, are the ethernet connected type of storage. The 8th page in the 4th article has a picture something like Bill F's idea of the future, with storage at the center and servers at the periphery. Difference is that a Brocade fibre channel fabric switch is shown at the center because they wrote the papers! You have to download the pdfs.

I agree with the articles, especially that SANs are an indispensable and very fast growing part of the IT landscape.
