Reagan blew the liberals out of the water just as he did the Soviets. By not backing down on military spending he forced the liberals to create a deficit so obscene that even they were forced to rethink their position. The democrats then became the party of free trade and low budget deficits and have seized the high ground from the Republicans. Oh yeah, the democrats can always be tempted to spend for one program or another but the Republicans pre-occupation with excessive tax cuts and social issues in effect cede the electorate to the Dems. What worries me is that in the coming election Democrats will have a booming economy plus control of both the executive and legislative branches. Will they then revert to the big spender philosophy?
