I do not have the details of the specs on the lens that Meade is supplying. As a result I am strictly guessing, but I suspect that the product could be acquired from other suppliers and that Meade simply supplied the best quality/cost balance (read VALUE).

In a situation as described, the vendor relationship is often times more financially significant to the vendor than the purchaser, unless the vendor is the only one capable of supplying the product and the system is specifically designed around it. This is a point of supply vulnerability that most system designers try to avoid.

As for distances, our systems are not limited to a maximum of 4km, they are capable of much greater distances, however link availability becomes a factor at greater distances. To what extent depends on your geographics, in a location like Las Vegas (very limited fog issues) functional transmission distances could be much larger than say San Francisco. The "availability" figures play a very distinct part in the advertised operational distances.

Laser output power is a significant limiting factor when discussing both distances and availability figures and is one that will not go away in the short run. The eye safety standards outline specific regulations pertaining to output power per sq. cm of aperture. These limits are not likely to change as they pertain directly to the tolerance levels of the human eye. fSONA, specifically, does still have room to increase the transmit power levels of our system and this is an area where we will continue to look at enhancements.
