Fiber ring... allows for bi-directional traffic. Older Cable infrastructures were one way only and are therefor not capable of supporting internet traffic. Early implmentations got around this by having you plug your set top box into the telephone line (WebTV was one). HFC backbones are fundamental to multiservice support on cable.
