There was a time when EMC wasn't perceived as a threat to the server vendors. EMC gained the upper hand through making storage intelligent and stealing functionality from the server. So my statement was based on the notion of where the intelligence will ultimately reside within the SAN, not where it is today. I agree that it does seem far-fetched with SANs being in the early stages that they are. Years ago nobody would have guessed that the networks intelligence would shift from the server to the storage peripheral. That is exactly what is happening. MR thinks that intelligent storage will account for 70% of all high-end hardware sales by 2002.

Could another shift take place in the distant future? I am by no means an expert on this. A little healthy paranoia never hurt.
