Intelligent Agents Increasingly Used In E-Commerce
Intelligent agents are moving into the rapidly-growing worlds of e-commerce and wireless Net devices, according to a number of announcements in the last week.
NQL Solutions, which is a division of AlphaServ.com, says that it has incorporated support for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-enabled Internet-connected smart phones and the Palm VII wireless handheld device. The company?s Network Query Language (NQL) enables developers to create intelligent agent-based applications.
For example, a sports-news Web site wanting to offer up-to-the- minute scores could create an NQL application that uses intelligent agents to automatically retrieve the scores from virtually any type of information source and dynamically present the information on a wireless device.
E-Food.com says it will employ intelligent agents to help restaurateurs to customize and independently manage their online presence. Specifically, restaurants can use E-Food.com to create customized Web sites that enable customers to order food either from the desktop PCs or using wireless devices.
The intelligent agent technology enables consumers to select their favorite cuisine from participating restaurants by the consumer's local neighborhood area and to view their order history data. The intelligent agent also will allow the restaurateur to view all trend information on the transactions that take place between the consumer and the restaurant. However, no private background information on the specific consumer is released through this system.
In a third announcement in the last week, AdRelevance, a service of Web advertising measurement firm Media Metrix, said it will start monitoring entertainment industry Web sites using intelligent agent technology. The AdRelevance service enables marketing and advertising executives to track where, when, how and how much their competition is advertising online.
The service, which already is available for other industries, uses the AdRelevance Online Media Network Intelligent Agent (OMNIAC). This technology systematically searches commercial sites on the Web and captures detailed data about advertising. It evaluates more than 3,000 Web sites and sub-sites daily and 40 million page views per month. The company?s goal is to provide in-depth advertising and tracking information.
The OMNIAC technology was developed by the company's core development team, which includes engineers best known for developing the MetaCrawler search technology currently licensed to Go2Net and Jango.
