It is NOT questionable as to whether or not the DSP can handle multiple DRMs. It most certainly can.

A DSP is simply a specialized CPU. It is PROGRAMMED to do whatever it is that you want it to do. There is nothing inherent in the architecture of a DSP that makes it unable to handle multiple DRMs.

Of course, it DOES need software. But I don't see anything unique about MicroOS that would drive manufacturers to use it instead of their own software.

So, yes, the DSP *can* handle any codec/DRM out there - with programming. But it doesn't have to be EDIG's programming. There is nothing compelling about EDIG's software, so it really comes down to a build/buy decision based on unit quantity and time to market. SOME manufacturers may find it attractive to use EDIG's software if they are building a small quantity and/or require a quick time-to-market. (They also may start out with EDIG to acheive a quick time-to-market, and then write their own software to reduce unit cost.)

The notion that EDIG has invented something new and marvelous by accomodating multiple codecs and DRMS is patently rediculous.

Gee wilikers, Batman, they have just re-invented the case statement!

(A case statement is a statement present in all modern programming languages. It is used to select among several alternatives. It was invented in the late 60's...)
