Hi Karl, I think that I understand your question. I actually use a variety of approaches.

I often scan for specific patterns (my favorite is the bullish catapult) and then do the FA. I watch for the float and short interest as well as standard financial stuff.

I also have a list of stocks that are favorites that I know the fundamentals pretty well and I check their charts on a regular basis for entry and exit points.

And then people will bring stuff to my attention and I do a quick chart read and quick fundamental analysis. These ones I often enter very quickly and if they don't go in my direction very quickly, I will often exit. Some have become part of my list of favorites though. In other words, these are probably the riskiest.

My most successful stuff has been from the list of stocks that I like. Though the pattern scans has provided some real zingers.
