F Y I: IBM Sets $400 Million Storage Area Networks E-Business Program

SOMERS, N.Y. -(Dow Jones)- International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) unveiled a $400 million initiative to offer services to the storage area network, or SAN, market. In a press release Tuesday, IBM said as part of its initiative, it will establish more than 50 SAN centers with business partners to develop services, establish new SAN testing facilities in Montpellier, France and Makuhari, Japan and expand its storage sales force by more than 1,000. The company will also offer new models of the Shark Enterprise Storage Server, as well as fiber channel-based SAN products. The new Shark server has a 64-bit RISC processor, 16 gigabytes of cache and additional PCI buses. IBM is also offering a SAN service using a cluster of two Netfinity servers with fibre channel connections and Legato mirroring extension software.
