BSES Telecom to launch Internet Services by end March; unveils pricing strategy

BSES Telecom will be launching its internet services within its licensed area in Mumbai on the midnight of 31st March 2000. Branded 'Powersurfer.net' the services will be available through high band-width Optical Fibre Cables (OFC) built up by the parent BSES Ltd. As of today, 140kms have been linked by OFCs and work is in progress in the remaining areas, which is expected to be completed by December 2000.

BSES Telecom also unveiled its much awaited pricing strategy. For 1000 hours (including 500 hours at night) Powersurfer would be charging Rs5500 and Rs5350 for renewal. The user need not even pay local telephone charges. MTNL on the other hand charges Rs12500 for ISDN (64Kbps) and Rs25000 for ISDN (128Kbps) for 500 hours. VSNL charges Rs10500 for 500 hours at 64Kbps. Rolta charges Rs5290 for 1000 hours including 500 hours at night, plus local call charges.

At the outset, all we can say is that the variable cost for the user of Powersurfer is very attractive indeed. We say this because there is the additional element of installation charges which is virtually nil in case of MTNL and VSNL. The user will have to install CAT-5 at his premises, for which the exact expenditure details are awaited.

Mr R V Shahi while speaking on the potential customer base and growth, said that India has 1mn internet users which is expected to go up to 8-10mn in 5 years. BSES Telecom will incur a capex of Rs3.5bn in the next 2-3 years. This will include the capex on internet kiosks that BSES Telecom will be setting up in a 51:49 JV with Sriven Multitech, called Powersurfer Interactive Ltd. The JV plans to set up 1000 kiosks by December 2000, at a total investment of Rs600-800mn. BSES will pump in an additional equity of Rs650mn into BSES Telecom, taking the latter's equity share capital to Rs700mn. BSES Telecom will possibly think of inviting strategic partners / ADR listing after a year.

We will shortly give you a detailed update of the press meet held by BSES for the ISP launch.
