Hydrogen is much cleaner too since batteries use all kinds of different chemicals and metals. Hydrogen is a much more efficient energy transmission medium than electricity. The energy drop due to electrical resistance losses are much greater than pipeline losses for hydrogen. Battery losses may be higher hydrogen storage losses.

I did a study of environmental impacts of electricity generation from alternative energy in 1993. At that time the lifecycle emissions from fuel cells were similar although slightly lower than combined cycle combustion turbine units. For example sulphur oxide emissions were 1.4-10.3 kg/MWe-h for CTUs and 1.5- 11.1kg/MWe-h PAFC natural gas fuel cells. Most of the NOX and SOX emisssion come from the fuel extraction stage with CO2 from extraction and operation stages. Lifecycle analysis is of course the fairest way to assess emissions.
Since combined cycle CTU's are fairly efficient and use clean burning natural gas they compare pretty well for electricity production.

I will do some checking on the current status of electrolysis.

PV's would of course be more widely distributed than just New Mexico. But your point is well taken - land use impacts of PV's would be significant - there is no free lunch.
