EDIG has no lock on programming for DSPs. Nobody NEEDS EDIG to make a DSP act as an encoder/decoder, as multiple encoder/decoders, or to manage flash memory. Whether or not anybody uses EDIG's software rather than writing their own is strictly an economic decision. Once that I am convinced will be resolved, in the case of high-volume manufacturers - in favor of the "build your own" decision.

This is the key part that seems so hard for folks to believe. I would be willing to guess that if I spent a little time on the net i could find some code written for x chip to handle flash memory management. It's already being done... as devices arrive that need to scale this up significantly programmers will just hammer on existing code. It's no more difficult than gardening.

I am good friends with a guy that owns a company that makes a specific product for guitarists. It is a stompbox that does "phrase sampleing".

This is a similar product to a compressed audio player, with the *notable* difference of all the formats and DRM stuff being not needed. But he knows about programming for DSPs or other specialized micro processors. We have talked about this issue in regards to EDIG. He agrees that writing code to:

1. Decompress audio
2. Manage flash memory
3. Accept 'plug-in' codecs (or decs ;)

is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

It would take an experienced programmer.

But there are as many of those as there are folks that can grow a decent tomato.
