Binx,

wired.com

I read a relatively long article in Wired this month dedicated to the IBM researcher named Stuart Parkin who discovered the GMR technology used in disc drives. He is also a MRAM pioneer. It seems that MRAM is still a ways off and they are talking about very small capacity chips for the time being. Also, the technology (processes) required to layer the magnetic media on silicon is very costly at the present time. I wonder if MRAM will compare to flash RAM with respect to price given the capacity needed for storage of large, static files such as mp3's and digital photographs. The real advantages over flash appear to be related to integration with processing elements and the ability to eliminate a DRAM buffer where flash contents are written at boot-up. Flash is too slow and too fatique-able to be useful for anything more that file or code storage, if I correctly understand the virtues of MRAM that were described.

I will try to post more details later. The take-home message from my standpoint was that flash is still several years ahead with respect to cost and scalability.

They still have not contacted me about doing a piece on Dr. Harari and his research team at SanDisk. I told them it would make a great cover story about 5 months ago when they devoted a big chunk of the magazine to Sony's CEO and their research think tank. Maybe it is time to e-mail David Sheff again to see what is up.

He seemed somewhat receptive to the idea after I e-mailed him originally.
