Motorola Expands Global Fixed Wireless Broadband Solutions Portfolio Through OEM Agreement With Netro
Motorola to market and distribute Netro's AirStar system to service providers worldwide
CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 2000-- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - news), a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions, and Netro Corporation (NASDAQ: NTRO - news) of San Jose, Calif., a market leader in broadband wireless access equipment, today announced an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement under which Motorola will market and distribute Netro's AirStar broadband wireless access system to telecommunications service providers worldwide.
This OEM agreement puts in place another element of Motorola's end-to-end fixed wireless solution portfolio, aimed at providing network operators with broadband wireless access communications solutions. The addition of the Netro AirStar system immediately extends Motorola's offerings of broadband wireless access solutions to the 10, 26, and 39 GHz ranges, complementing its 28GHz US LMDS solution offered through SpectraPoint Wireless LLC, an affiliate jointly owned by Motorola and Cisco Systems, Inc. This agreement expands Motorola's ability to fulfill the promise of the Motorola -Cisco alliance -- providing leading end-to-end solutions in the fixed and mobile wireless markets -- by increasing the range of solutions available to Motorola for alliance customers.
``These bands are the four most commonly licensed broadband wireless access frequency bands worldwide,' said Rickie Currens, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Fixed Wireless Systems Group. ``We believe that we are now able to address the complete range of our customers' wireless access needs to provide business and multi-dwelling unit end-users with voice and high-speed data services.'
``There are significant immediate opportunities available to us globally to provide business users with high-speed voice and data services, and Netro's AirStar offers a proven solution,' Currens said. ``This agreement with Netro allows us to better meet the global market demand for broadband wireless access solutions. By combining Motorola's strengths in systems planning and integration, deployment, services, and customer care, Cisco's leading IP-based products and services, and Netro's high quality AirStar products, we can offer excellent solutions to carry voice and data.'
``This global OEM agreement with Motorola significantly expands our sales channels for our products,' said Gideon Ben-Efraim, president and chief executive officer of Netro Corporation. ``Our competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) customers are offering a broadband wireless access solution for voice and data and are driven by quick-to-market deployment strategies. Motorola is a global player in the wireless telecom world and we are very excited about partnering with such a strong player.'
