Intel to unveil faster Celeron chips</>
SAN FRANCISCO, March 28 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. said it will unveil on Wednesday two faster versions of its Celeron processor family, targeted to the low-cost PC sector, designed using Intel's new manufacturing process.
Intel said its new Celeron chips will run at clock speeds of 566 and 600 megahertz. The chips will be priced at $167 and $181, respectively, in quantities of 1,000.
These are the first Celeron chips manufactured using Intel's 0.18 micron process technology, which creates finer linewidths between the transistors than the older 0.25 micron process.
"It will give you 10 to 56 percent improvements in performance," said Jeff McCrea, director of desktop marketing at Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel. McCrea said that performance improvements vary depending on the application being used.
Personal computer makers will shortly be announcing new systems priced in the under $1,000 category designed around the new Celeron chips, Intel said. |
