IBM Plans $400 Million Investment in Data Storage

International Business Machines Corp., Armonk, N.Y., said it will invest $400 million in its growing
computer-data storage business. The investment includes the hiring of about 1,000 people in sales
and services, about a 40% increase in the company's data-storage work force. IBM also is
creating more than 50 customer centers in the U.S., Europe and Asia. IBM said it will build at least
four software testing centers in the U.S., France, Japan and Singapore. IBM declined to quantify its
revenue in this market, but its latest investment is expected to help the company in its battle against
EMC Corp., the market leader in computer-data storage. In 4 p.m. composite trading Tuesday on
the New York Stock Exchange, IBM fell $4.50 to $122.0625.
