Interesting definition

I guess MCD is therefore a monopoly since as a MCD franchisee I'm under strict requirements as to how I can prepare and market a Big Mac. Certainly every broadcaster is a monopoly since, for example, a CBS affiliate must carry CBS programming. And, of course, SUNW is most certainly a monopoly since I dare not make changes to Java without risking legal action.

Come to think of it, what business is not a monopoly by this definition? Any branded product or service is subject to packaging, marketing, and quality controls imposed by the brand owner. It's what makes the brand. If you don't like it, simply choose another brand. Don't like Windows? Buy a Mac, run Linux, etc. Don't like the WSJ's editorial policy? Then read another paper. Choose Pepsi vs. Coke, etc. There is no coercion, simply choice.
