I think MC was saying, there will be no specific write off for this. The expenses will be treated as normal expense items as they occur. In that case, there should be no flexibility or delaying the recognition of expenses.

I'm not a CPA, but we got on this slippery slope by recognizing income before it was realized. (That was stuffing the channel.) Compaq needs to keep the books meticulously clean. IMHO MC was indicating that with his comment on the Alpha WIN NT expenses. The analysts will jump on anything that looks off base accounting wise.
