I don't think I'd want to characterize these people as animals, but you really wonder if welfare doesn't just make everything worse by killing off the necessary work skills and attitudes. I knew the fellow who invented the hula-hoop, and he described a similar situation on the east coast in the '50s. He was able to keep his plant open, but he was struck by the indifference to work exhibited by the people he tried to employ.
