I've had that happen a couple of times.

Once it was related to a specific email message. Don't ask me why, but once I fired up outlook exp., downloaded waiting messages, went back to messenger and all was well. I could tell it was during the download because it would repeatedly die on message 3 of 49 or whatever.

The other time, was related to one of the email folders, once I deleted the trash and compacted message folders it went back to normal.
