"Texas Pacific Group to invest at least $300 million in Gemplus
Fort Worth-based Texas Pacific Group will invest between $300 million and $500 million in one of the world's largest smart card vendors, Gemenos, France-based Gemplus SCA. Texas Pacific, a private investment firm with $7 billion in assets, will become one of the major shareholders in Gemplus, but the two companies did not disclose its precise share of Gemplus equity. Gemplus will use the new capital to expand in such areas as electronic commerce, wireless communications and computer network security, says Chairman Marc Lassus, who told Card Technology last week that he had attracted a major U.S. investor. The infusion of capital ensures Gemplus' survival at a time when the smart card industry is poised for rapid growth and consolidation, says Henry Dreifus, CEO of Longwood, FL-based Drefus Associates. "It gets them to the kind of scale they're going to need to have long-term success." (1/26)
