Your logic is, as always, impeccable. Any government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul. The politicians have rigged the game so that they can enjoy power and financial influence that they could never otherwise achieve as individuals operating in the real economy. They draw power by running some 20% of the GDP through their own hands. They've cleverly convinced everyone that someone else is going to pay. And perhaps it's even true, since the last figures I saw showed that 25% of the population pays 90% of the income taxes.

I don't think I'd go so far as to use the term parasites for those not bearing an equal per-capita share of the burden. My sister, who I love dearly, makes less in a year than I make (or, like today, lose!) in a day in the capital markets. What she's paying is reasonable under the circumstances. I just wish they's simplify the tax system so there wasn't so much fuss about paying. I'd prefer a flat rate with a floor that exempted people such as my sister from any payment whatever. And I'd like them to spend less, of course, since so much of the tax money is wasted on ineffective programs.
