University statements misrepresented on 20/20.

To the Editor:

Regarding the letter you published March 27 by Professor David Cameron, I did not make the comments that ABC's 20/20 program attributed to a Yale spokesman in its story about Suzanne Jovin's slaying.

When 20/20 initially requested an interview for its story, I declined on behalf of the University, stating that 1) only the police can speak authoritatively about the criminal investigation and 2) ABC should utilize all of the statements the University had made and the actions it had taken to memorialize Suzanne and to support her spirit of community service. I also told 20/20 that I hoped it would make good use of its interviews with Suzanne's family and friends to present the fullest portrait of Suzanne and her achievements. Like everyone else at Yale, I regret that the program's focus on the criminal investigation meant that so little of Suzanne's life was recalled.

The ABC show repeated its request for an interview on numerous occasions over a period of months, and I constantly reminded 20/20 that the request had already been declined for the reasons cited above.

As a spokesperson for Yale, I have responded to literally hundreds of requests from the media for information and comment regarding the killing of Suzanne Jovin and subsequent events. I never expressed to any of those countless media members the sentiments attributed to me by ABC, nor are they true.
