TV Azteca talks with Telefonica, others on deals
MEXICO CITY, March 29 (Reuters) - Mexico's second largest broadcaster, TV Azteca, said on Wednesday it was in talks with Spain's Telefonica as well as other telecommunication firms over possible deals involving the Mexican company's phone and Internet units. "There are a lot of people who have visited us lately ... Telefonica (MADRID:TEF) is just one of many who have approached TV Azteca," TV Azteca's (NYSE:TZA) chief financial officer Luis Echarte told Reuters. TV Azteca owns a 50 percent stake in upstart wireless telephone operator Unefon. Unefon owns the right to operate several frequencies for fixed wireless telephone, voice, video and data transmission. It also has point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections. "It is the biggest spectrum (in Mexico)," Echarte said. Terra Networks (MADRID:TRR)(NASDAQ:TRRA), a subsidiary of Telefonica, is among several firms interested in developing synergies with TV Azteca's 50-percent owned Internet unit, Todito.com. "The idea is to expand Todito, take it to Spanish speakers (living in the United States), and we are seeking partners who can open up that door," Echarte added. mexicocity.newsroom@reuters.com)) |
