Genomics/bioinformatics index...

The last time I posted this index closely approximated the recent peak of the group (3/3: siliconinvestor.com.

In the intervening ~month we've had a) juuuust a little bit of profit taking, b) a crash.....

Presented below is the performance data since March 3rd and since last fall. It's impressive how relatively consistent (and severe) the retracement has been across the group. This is especially clear in the longer term data where there has been very little change in the relative performance of the stocks over the last 4 weeks.

Other factoids:
-While Millennium and Affymetrix escaped some of the worst carnage in March, the stocks are up only 38%/29% in the last 5+ months. Surprising for two of the most recognizable names in the sector.

-Another company that is constantly in the news, Incyte, lost 2/3 of its value in the last month (from $246 to $82), and was the 2nd worst performing stock during this period.

Certainly owning the 'leaders' in the sector did NOT turn out to be the best play during this specific time frame.

Ariad succumbed to the carnage in line with the sector. However, its YTD performance remains stellar and exceptional: recall the stock closed 1999 at 2 13/16.
