(BSNS WIRE) MRV Is First to Unveil 10Gb/s Transceiver Module Using Coarse Wave Division
Multiplexing Technology

Business Editors

CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 2000--MRV
Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:MRVC), a leading supplier of fiber optic
components for the infrastructure of the Internet, today announced
that it has begun manufacturing its Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing
(CWDM) transceivers for metro and regional networks.
This is the first 10Gb/s transceiver module in the industry using
CWDM technology, with distance support up to 50km.
This new optical 4xtransceiver line is offered at speeds of 4xOC12,
4xGigabit Ethernet or 4xOC48 and 1xOC-192 with distances up to 80km,
65km, and 50km respectively. The transceivers transmit four channels
using four wavelengths in the 1.5 micrometer low loss fiber window.
The utilization of CWDM transceivers in regional networks is being
pioneered by MRV. The new devices use active laser components
fabricated in MRV's Chatsworth facility, and passive multiplexing
components fabricated by MRV's most recent acquisition, Fiber Optic
Communications Inc. (FOCI).
Ken Ahmad, general manager of MRV's optics division, commented:
"Together with FOCI, we now have the ability to produce breakthrough
hybrid products based on integrated active and passive components. The
10Gb/s optical transceiver is just the first fruit of the new optical
MRV. It absolutely validates our leadership in optical transceivers."
Steve Lin, president of FOCI, commented: "The merger with the
Optical Access division of MRV provides FOCI with exciting new
opportunities to develop highly integrated active and passive
solutions. Given our capacity increase, we can certainly accommodate
the needs of leading-edge customers who will use this product in
regional networks."
Mark Heimbuch, chief technology officer of MRV optics, commented:
"By using CWDM, multiple wavelengths transmission eliminates the
distance limitation imposed on high bit rate optical transmission.
This technology brings the benefit afforded until now only to
long-haul carrier backbones, to the regional and metropolitan
networks. Time to market for next-generation transceivers can be
significantly reduced when the new transceiver is used."
These CWDM transceivers will be used in high-speed connections of
ATM switches and IP routers. In addition, they can solve fiber exhaust
problems by concentrating traffic using WDM technology. Where fiber
availability is limited, a four times increase can provide the
necessary bandwidth.
The CWDM transceiver modules will be available beginning in the
second quarter of 2000.
