Thanks to all for getting this thread back on topic. I'd like to share some observations on Newport as a customer and the optics business in general.
I'm a analyitical instrument / semi equipment design engineer and I've been a loyal Newport customer for 20+ years. Their mainstay is the little widgets used in designing optical systems. Most of their stuff isn't rocket science, but if one looks at making or buying this stuff, it's often more economical, less expensive, and faster to buy it from Newport. Thier stuff is technically excellent, and thier sales/apps force is first rate. They have recently developed an extensive line of vibration control devices that should do very well in the future. The optics stuff is often small volume sales, but the vibration isolation stuff could have pretty good OEM volume.

The optics business is technically interesting, but as a business, well, farming is almost as good. That said, Newport does as well as anybody.
They have lots of competition in the optical component side of their busines. New Focus and Melles Griot, are some of thier real competitors. There's a host of really small mon and pop competitors that tend to make this market somewhat of a commodity market and depress prices and margins.
Newport rises above this by developing new markets and concentrating on customer service. If anybody can farm this marginal soil, Newport can!

P.S. Much of their product line is OEM from other vendors, but thats not a bad thing. Much of this stuff is low volume and it wouldn't make sense for them to build it themsleves.
