I was just talking to a friend the other day who encountered some problem in his GSM-over-IP box, where after running for a couple of hours, the system crashes. After debugging, they were pretty sure that the bug was somewhere in VxWorks' TCP/IP stack. They talked to WRS, but WRS wouldn't release the code nor recognize it. After a few weeks, WRS came back, acknowledged the bug, and wanted my friend's company to help them debug it.

My point is that if the source code were open, my friend would have fixed the bug a few weeks earlier, which would make a big difference for a startup trying to make it.
