It depends on what you mean, but in the accepted meaning of the term (remote from real life concerns, such as career and current events) yes, it aspires to be an ivory tower, and tends to discourage interest in practicalities. If you mean is it utterly theoretic and scholarly, no, it is relatively superficial, from a scholarly standpoint, and promotes earnest inquiry into important topics, like what constitutes the good life, and what is the basis of social obligation. It is not rigorously philosophical, but more "liberal arty", which can be a source of weakness. On the other hand, it provides room for many different temperaments and mentalities to join together in reasonably intelligent discussion. Ask me more, if this is insufficient....... |
