John and Thread: I don't think it's the same rumor, just a re-run of the same rumor. I expect there'll be another one next Thursday.

Waiting Out the Margin Selling By James J. Cramer 3/30/00 1:24 PM ET
Good nap! Just kidding. We are keeping our powder dry after our first buys. So if we bought Nokia (NOK:NYSE ADR - news - boards) at 206 this morning, we aren't going to buy more until it is lower.
As far as the Nazzdogs, we are in margin hell. We can't add until we are sure that the worst of the margin selling has happened. I don't care if I am boring you with this margin stuff, it is making us good money and we talk about it incessantly and it kept us from buying that blip up.
As it became evident that there was a move into the consumer stocks that had some traction, we added to our food and drug companies. And we wait, and read the TSC broker survey and wait and read it again.
Oh, for full color, I have lost my voice so I am AOL Instant Messaging anything I want done. Real drag.
Random musings: Great, we buy the Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - news - boards) off the Tiger mess and sombody spreads rumors that Compaq (CPQ:NYSE - news - boards) is going to preannounce. So we buy some of that too. Are we gluttons or what?
From last Thursday ...

We can't press the sales here. We are hoping the market actually comes in because it would seem that things at the companies we like in tech are doing so well that it would be a gift if the market declined between here and quarter end. We don't want to lose our positions between now and the end of the quarter.
Oh I wish I could be more cautious, more negative, more skeptical, more gosh darn bearish but with General Electric (GE:NYSE - news - boards) and Cisco (CSCO:Nasdaq - news - boards) and Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - news - boards) and Chase (CMB:NYSE - news - boards) at or near all-time highs, what am I supposed to do, foment trouble? I can't pull that Barton Biggs stuff. Too many good things happening. Our sheets reflect this nontension: We have only two shorts, neither of which are large or noteworthy. Only silly raids like that on Compaq (CPQ:NYSE - news - boards) that the bears trumped up earlier today mar the solid action.
Sometimes, when I look at the green on my screen and listen to Jeff "Old Tech" Berkowitz and Matt "New Tech" Jacobs there is a nice synergy. The companies that are doing well do go up!
What a relief.
