Xerox Ranked No. 1 in U.S. Digital Copier Market

March 30, 2000 03:06 PM Eastern Time
ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 2000--Xerox Corporation XRX is No. 1 in digital copier sales for the second consecutive year, accounting for more than 35 percent of all units placed in the United States in 1999.

According to estimates recently released by two leading information-technology research firms, Xerox sold almost twice as many black-and-white digital copiers as the nearest competitive brand. Both IDC and Dataquest, a Gartner Group company, ranked Sharp second with about 18 percent market share, while Canon placed third with about 11 percent.

"Xerox has proved once again that it is the undisputed leader in the digital copier market. This is a title we intend to keep," said Gil Hatch, president, Xerox Office Systems Group. "Customers clearly trust Xerox offerings, and we'll safeguard that trust by continuing to provide the industry's best array of digital products and solutions."

Both companies' market estimates pointed to Xerox' leadership:

-- IDC estimates that Xerox placed 332,600 of the 907,470 digital copiers sold last year to hold a 37 percent share of the overall U.S. market.

-- Dataquest estimates that Xerox placed 327,600 of the 925,600 digital copiers sold last year to hold a 35.4 percent share of the overall U.S. market.

Xerox attributes its market success to its broad copier line - ranging from personal copiers that produce 6 pages per minute (ppm) to high-end systems at 135 ppm. In addition, Xerox is increasingly selling its mid- to high-range digital copiers not as standalone "peripherals" but as total document solutions whose advanced networking features help people productively manage and easily share documents throughout the office.

Leading the Xerox digital product line is the Xerox Document Centre family of products for office workgroups and departments. Ranging from 20 to 65 ppm, the products can be configured as standalone devices for walk-up digital copying, or as networked systems that can print, scan, copy and fax.

For small and home offices, Xerox offers 10 digital personal copiers, ranging from 6 to 16 ppm. According to Dataquest, Xerox captured more than 78 percent of the digital personal copier segment. In addition, Xerox outdistanced its rivals in placements of units producing copies at 90 ppm or more, such as the DocuTech 135, a sophisticated 135-ppm digital system.

Xerox also credits its rise in digital copier market leadership to the company's aggressive foray into new distribution channels. Over the past several years, Xerox has expanded the portfolio of products available through retailers, resellers and dealers, capturing significant sales volume and market share in the process.
